Microorganisms
Challenge: Design a microbe of your choice, either a bacterium, a virus or a fungus using the materials provided
This week Year 2 and 3 learned about microbes - living organisms so small that we need a microscope to see them. Whilst some microbes can make us ill, others are useful or even good for us!

Here are the microbes designed by students from Year 2 and Year 3.

Renewable Energy - Solar Ovens!
Challenge: To create a solar oven that will heat and cook food
Year 2 and 3 looked at renewable and non-renewable sources of energy.
Non renewable energy sources cannot be replaced once they run out.
Renewable energy is made from resources that can be replaced, like wind, water and sunshine.
Renewable energy is also called "clean energy" or "green power" because it doesn't pollute the air or the water.
Have a look at this website to see how wind turbines work http://energy.gov/eere/wind/how-do-wind-turbines-work
This website shows how solar panels work https://www.highlightskids.com/science-questions/how-do-solar-panels-work
Our aim was to test the solar ovens during the following session and see whether they would cook food!
Renewable Energy - Session 2
Unfortunately, the sky was cloudy during session 2! This meant that the students were unable to test their solar ovens. However, this did raise an important question - is renewable energy a reliable source of energy? We noted that this is sometimes one of the potential problems with renewable energy.
Instead, the students were set the task of designing an innovative product that used a renewable source of energy as its power source.
Here are some of the brilliant designs from Year 2 and Year 3. Each team had to think carefully about how their product would work together with the presentation of their design. The students also had to work well together in a group, taking it in turns to share their ideas and delegating roles.
